As the weather gets colder here in the Hudson Valley, a portion of the population relocates to the warmer climes of Florida for the winter months. Part of the collection will be travelling to Florida this winter as well. A selection of photographic scenes of urban life will travel to the Florida Museum of of Photographic Arts in Tampa for an exhibition entitled Naked City: Photographs from Vassar College’s Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center.
Naked City includes some of the most iconic images of social documentary and street photography made in America the last century. Named after the acclaimed 1945 book of photographs by Weegee, the exhibition includes photographs by twenty renowned photographers that favor directness, immediacy, and realism in depicting cities as varied as New York, Chicago, and New Orleans. The work is divided into three categories: city dwellers, city streets, and cityscapes. Themes of the exhibition include architecture, alienation, personalities, everyday life, street scenes, family, poverty, and progress. Some of the artists whose work is included are modern masters Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Harry Callahan, Walker Evans, Andreas Feininger, Lee Freidlander, Lewis Hine, Frank Paulin, and Weegee as well as more contemporary photographers such as Bruce Davidson, Rineke Dijkstra, Nan Goldin, Philip Lorca diCorcia, and Andy Warhol.
If you are headed south this winter, the exhibition will be on view in Tampa until January 22, 2011.
