William Hogarth (English, 1697-1764) The Idle Prentice at Play in the Church Yard during Divine Service (from Industry and Idleness), 1747, Engraving, Anonymous Gift

On November 10, 1697, William Hogarth was born in London. Describing his formative years in Anecdotes of William Hogarth, Written by Himself, the artist, known for his satirical paintings and prints, wrote:

“As I had a naturally good eye, and a fondness for drawing, shows of all sorts gave me uncommon pleasure when an infant; and mimickry, common to all children, was remarkable to me.”

The humble Hogarth is not only immortalized by the phrase “Hogarthian” but also manages to maintain a posthumous Twitter account.
