50 Years with Nancy Graves

In 1970, only thirty years old, Nancy Graves had her work on the cover of Artforum and had work at the Whitney Museum. However, Graves’s aesthetic changed over the course of the years. In the current exhibition in the Project Gallery the Art Center, the work on display is much more colorful and playful than the taxidermy camels and arrays of fossils she was constructing in the early 70’s. But her work over time has continued to explore the “form and function of natural phenomenon.”

While the images in Artforum represent a different era of Graves’s artistic style, it is interesting to see how her more recent work is rooted in many of the same general concepts as her earlier work. Below are some images from Artforum (October 1970):
