Connections: Kinetic Art

Today’s post comes from Taylor Shoolery, class of 2012 and Art Center student docent.

In the current exhibition, A Taste for the Modern, we have on display a piece by artist George Rickey, a sculpture who worked with kinetic art. This video really captures the “lyrical” quality of his sculptures:

George Rickey is certainly an amazing artist, but the name I think of when “kinetic art” is mentioned is none other than Alexander Calder. Calder, who had a background in mechanical engineering, believed that art should reflect the dynamic motion of life. Below is a video of Calder’s “Circus” performed at the Whitney Museum.
