This summer in the Focus Gallery we have installed Naked City: Photographs from the Permanent Collection. This exhibition of twenty photographs is a small selection of the collection representing photographic scenes of urban life and including some of the most iconic images of social documentary and street photography made in America the last century. The photos by artists like Andy Warhol, Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott and Jerry Thompson capture my attention every time I wander through the galleries.
Included in the exhibition is Diane Arbus’ photograph, A Young Brooklyn Family Going for a Sunday Outing, N.Y.C. from 1966. I find both the photograph and the photographer beguiling. After her death in 1971, a short documentary was made by her friends and family. Now available on YouTube, the half-hour film is divided into four installments that provide background on the artist but also her impact on the people around her and the world of contemporary photography.
